DRAG: the epidemic of college smoking
DRAG is a stylistic documentary about what might be the least known public health problem in the country, college smoking. While every year fewer people start and more people quit, smoking runs rampant on college campuses. What is causing this epidemic and what does it mean for the future? Find out as we hear what the experts have to say and listen to the students fire back.

im a joker.. im a smoker.. im a midnight toker
@naivurtiv
Smoking hasn’t been considered cool since the 70′s (it’s actual heyday of social acceptability being way back in the 50′s). And in the Bible, people only smoked when they were on fire.
@sososayma unless people are living in caves the info on ciggies and what they do to u are pretty common knowledge by now ,regardless of ur education level,i mean grade school kids can tell u the dangers of smoking,so how is it that these “young adults ” ,who some ,in this clip, only started smoking since they entered college ,i think the real addiction is more mental than physical (i foud this to be in my own case anyways)BTW i meant this as a regular post ,didnt mean to single u out ,sorry
@mikestonetkd its funny how contradictary that stat is ,because some, or most of the people in this clip are pursuing a “higher education” being in college ,& yet they are still smoking, while some of them didnt start smoking till college, so much for higher equaling less smokers
They smoke because-especially if they are going away to college-they need human interaction and they are desperate. Im alone-until I smoke and then suddenly everyone is interested in me. I have friends people go oh hes not so bad. Thankfully I quit and for good. BUT-I am a lot lonelier. I dont drink and never really have. So you want friends? Pick your poison-cigs or alcohol. Sadly I have learned, people dont care about your personality and people aren’t interested in who YOU are.
ah, but people also tend to make less if they have a lower education level.
I think its odd that in this documentary the site “Social smoking” and smoking a couple cigerettes a week as a large percentage of the 40% of college students that smoke, but they don’t follow that up. I would like to here more about the ill effects of occassional smoking, and I wonder if those smokers are more likely to quit after college.
Wow, talk about a selective sample. I’d like to know how many respondants to the initial survey for the interviews said “I consider myself a smoker” and “I smoke alone”…
retards twisting logic and data, who cares if people smoke, college is the best years of yor life so fucking have a good time.
Smokers don’t like this statistic either, but it is quite clear that the smoking rates are higher as you go down the income scale.
In other words, the poorer a person is, the more likely they are to smoke.
So, in a nutshell, smoking is most popular among poor, uneducated people.
Ya, sounds mean and not PC, doesn’t it, but those are the facts.
Well, actually, statistics clearly show that the lower the education level, the higher the propensity to smoke cigarettes. Level of education means “level of education”, not education of cigarrette use. For example, a person with only a grade school education has a much higher chance of smoking than someone with a university education.
Sounds mean, but the facts seem to show that smoking really is for dummies.
when we say smoking is for the uneducated, we usually mean “lacking education and knowledge about cigarette addiction”. Other forms of education rarely make you smoke less. Does any amoker feel disgusted by a cigarette after reading a history book?
What crawled up your ass and died?
this is retarded and has no facts
Wow, go get help!
They will be suffering an agonizing death and are gonna go through such suffering they couldn’t even imagine possible and will in turn be dragging their loved ones through it too!
If people died quickly from smoking they would be scared and wouldn’t take it up in the first place but since the effects manifest themselves over years instead of days or weeks they think they’re safe. If they really knew what awaits them they wouldn’t even think about putting it in their mouths for one second. I’ve seen what happens through friends, relatives firsthand and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
They’re SO STUPID! And hopelessly hooked. It’s just a matter of time until the results show up. And believe me, they WILL show up! Since the effects of smoking are so slow to show up it lulls them into a sense of well being…for now. Years from now they’ll be developing all sorts of cancers and there won’t be ANY turning back! They’ll be sorry! It will be a SLOW PAINFUL DEATH!
whats better than getting shit faced and having a smoke? if you answered getting laid, you are correct!
“30% to 40% of college students smoke”?! followed by the comment “look around and nearly everybody smokes” says the lady in the kitchen. “A lot of people start smoking in college”.
Get real. Smoking is for the uneducated. I find it very hard to believe that in this day and age that college student smoking is increasing. Smokers are so outcast and isolated, where is the social pressure to start?
Interesting that we are hearing about college smoking… How about college drinking??? Which is more prevalent…why don’t you sleep it off and get real about the issues. Let’s see how much abuse, violence, murder, accidents, etc are caused by smoking versus drinking. Why don’t we take a poll of all of the prisons and see how many criminals are there because of alcohol. wheres the right to choose now. Mind your own business!
Second Hand Smoke is a fabricated issue. It was contrived to convince non-smokers that smokers were hurting them. Find one documented case of death by SHS. Yo can’t because there isn’t one. This is an attempt by the elite to socially engineer a specific behavior.
So who cares really? I agree that you shouldn’t have to put up with second hand smoke but it is up to me if I smoke or not. My choice, not yours to make for me. I quit 5 years ago after smoking for many years, but I only quit because of cost. I miss cigs every day, and probably always will.
I smoke because the bible tells me to do so… and also because it’s cool.
I think this video is a bit strange. It seems to almost flip-flop between “smoking is fun and social” and “don’t smoke, it’s bad for you.” Also, the odd scene transitions is distracting. They should fix this vid up a bit, make it clearer and less choppy.
