Think for a Change (14): Discipline through Pleasure..and Quit Smoking
I’m thinking of quitting smoking…no small task. But instead of quitting out of some sense of guilt or shame, like because smoking is bad or because others negatively judge those who do it, I want to apply some ideas that I have come across through podcasts and philosophy to make this a pleasurable process. That is, instead of using pain and punishment as a mode of discipline, I want to discipline myself to quit smoking through the use of pleasure. If and when I want a cigarette, I will ask myself, “What would I enjoy even more than a cigarette right now?” and then do that. You can listen to the podcast I mention here: www.radiolab.org (By the way, Radiolab is one of my favorite podcasts! The shows are definitely worth a listen.) And you can read my blog post about the Creation, Intensification and Multiplication of Pleasures here: littlebirdpoettree.blogspot.com

@Predator9710 good for you! I’m doing well, too.
Why is it that I always lose concentration and get bored when trying to read an interesting book, but I listen so intently and curiously when she’s reading an excerpt from a book?
for those of you complaining about smokers. I suggest you watch Bill hicks on Smoking

You smoke? YUCK!
Quitting anything takes will power…after the first few weeks things get easier. The brain reworks those craving as long as you have some MOTIVATION. Most importantly keep a positive mentality. You’ll be right!
@myphilifesophy
Been 5 weeks. Minecraft is my distraction
@Predator9710 Do it then!
I tried quitting cold turkey cause I want to wean off the nicotine. Needless to say, I was one crabby person! =P
If you quit, I’ll quit
5 gum > cigarette
You have the nicest teeth ever!
and when you do accidentally smoke again, don’t label yourself as weak and give up. it’s just a slip of foot. one accident is one accident, just get back up and figure out how you should deal wth it in future. and btw i’m just all talk… i’ve struggling to quit my addictions with other stuff… but stll it more or less helped me
changing your behavior using pleasure would be viable i guess, provided that you find not smoking more pleasurable than smoking. both pain and pleasure methods can work, but pleasure is better as there are less pressure (when you’re under pressure you’ll likely to relapse). to find that pleasure has always being hard because, like you said, the future self is weak.
Good luck!
@Thunderharald There’s a reason why a lot of artist use it. It really encourage you to think deeply. sometimes we get so caught up with our daily lives that we fail to see things from another point of view, taking Cannabis let you see things in another perspective. Its really sad that it has such a bad reputation, and so misleading that people put it in the same category such as Meth, Heroin etc. It really is natures gift. Help sick people eat, stronger material for cloth/papers and lots more.
Have you tried possibly…naps? A good ten minute nap, and maybe a long walk with a loved one afterwards. What ever your prefereences may be, it’s possible that napping and walking with someone you love (or even doing something else with him/her, am I right?
) might be a good altimatum -gosh, I hope I spelled that right!
First of all it’s kinda hard to whip out a joint in public or if you are at work for example and I would assume that most people don’t want to get stoned every time they feel like a fag. CB could probably be part of the solution if you are in to that kind of stuff but how you can profit from CB as an intellectual just escapes me. Please explain if you have the time.
Good o cannabis will do. An intellectual like yourself can profit from it.
A sure fire way to quit smoking is. Make sur
I never got addicted to smoking cigarettes because early on, I started to associate smoking with the hipster douchebaggery I would see in my college town. My disdain for hipsters saved my lungs.
I helped a friend of mine stop smoking. I told him to follow just five simple steps:
1) Do not buy cigarettes, (You are smoking it because you have it)
2) Do not put cigarettes in your mouth. (Have control on what goes into your mouth)
3) Do not accept cigarettes from anyone. (You do not need it)
4) Think of cigarettes as cocaine. (Cocaine and Crack addicts followed the same road that get you to become a smoker)
5) Remember you are getting rid of an addiction, not replacing one.
“your future self is so weak that it can easily be defeated by the present self, which is that one who craves…”
great ideas! interested to hear about how this works for you
Good for you. I hope you succeed. I am sending positive vibes your way. Making the decision to stop is a great start.
